Flexible Molding – A brief history

Many people have never heard of flexible molding and yet this time saver has been around for over 30 years.  Todays flexible molding resembles its origins little.

Flexible molding began as a result of manufacturer's seeking a lower cost to custom curved wood decorations on furniture.  Soon after home builders and cabinet shops began using this new material in place of traditional curved wood millwork.

Originally, most flexible moldings were made of polyester resin.  This material created a molding that was not only flexible but also stainable, insect and weather resistant and much cheaper than custom curved wood trim.  Flexible moudling is also much more forgiving than traditional methods.  As the name implies, it is flexible so it can be adjusted for a perfect fit - unlike wood molding.  There were some problems however with the original formulations.  Problems such as shrinkage, cracking and splitting and a rather strong smell resulted in slow acceptance by those used to the old craftsman’s way.

Around 1990, Flex Trim started to experiment with a new type of material for flexible molding using Polyurethane.  This new material solved many of its predecessors problems.  The new flexible molding was even more flexible than before, as well as more weather and insect resistant.  In addtion the polyurethane flexible molding was stronger, did not shrink and hard very little odor.  Unfortunately this new improved flexible molding material was much more expensive.  Fortunately with many of the old drawbacks overcome it acceptance grew much bringing down the cost.
